Car Repair
The majority of people in the UK, now own a car and unfortunately if the car is not new then it will not be covered by a warranty against any repair work that it needs. Because of this, the car owner will either need to repair the car themselves (most of us are not capable of doing this or do not have the time) or they could put the car into a garage to be repaired.
The problem which generally occurs by putting a car into a garage for repair is that the owner is normally charged a large amount of money in order to get it fixed. Some garages are ok but there are a few out there who will be aware of the fact that the owner does not know anything about repairing a car and these people will therefore, tend to invent problems or charge huge amounts of money for the simplest of jobs!
A good option for a car owner is to have their car serviced regularly. This will prevent any serious repair problems from happening, as they should be detected earlier enabling them to be repaired quicker and preventing any further problems from occurring.
Sometimes situations can occur regardless of how regularly the owner services their car, which could unfortunately cause all of it, or some of it to break. The problem could be a straightforward problem with a simple solution, or it may be a bigger problem with a difficult solution. An example of an easy problem would be the cars brakes because all the owner will have to do is replace them. However, a serious problem could be when bits of the engine start to mysteriously break down. The owner may well contemplate whether or not is worth rebuilding the engine, or whether they should just replace the whole thing.
In order to prevent their engine from malfunctioning in this way, there are a few points that they should consider doing:
Keep the engine properly tuned - Repairing a car which is evidently out of tune or that has failed its emissions test could improve its fuel mileage in the region of around 4 percent, although these results will change based on the type of repair that the car has and on how well it has been done.
If the owner fixes a major maintenance problem, for instance a faulty oxygen sensor, it could also improve their mileage by as high as 40 percent.
Regularly check and replace air filters – If the owner of the car replaces their clogged air filters regularly, it could improve their car's fuel mileage by around 10 percent. The car's air filter will stop any impurities from harming the inside of their engine. As well as saving on fuel this will also protect their engine.
Keep tyres properly inflated – A driver can improve their fuel mileage by about 3.3 percent just by keeping their tyres inflated to the right pressure. An Under-inflated tyre can actually lower the fuel mileage by around 0.4 percent for each 1 PSI decrease in pressure for all of the four tyres. A properly inflated tyre is safer and will last longer.
Use the suggested grade of car oil – The car owner can actually improve their fuel mileage by about 1-2 percent just by using the car manufacturer's suggested grade of car oil. For instance, by using a 10W-30 motor oil in a car engine which is designed to use a 5W-30, they can decrease their fuel mileage by 1-2 percent. If they use a 5W-30 oil in a car engine which is designed for a 5W-20 they could decrease their fuel mileage by around 1-1.5 percent. They should also; buy motor oil which says it is energy conserving on the API performance sign in order to be certain that it has the friction-reducing additives.
Another point to consider when repairing a car is whether or not it is a classic car. The parts of a classic car are not very easy to find, and they could be very costly even for a small part. A lot of their parts can only be found in a used condition and not all mechanics will know how to repair the cars. This would mean that either the owner will have to repair it themselves or they will have to find one of the few specialised workshops to do it for them. This could prove to be very expensive.
It is therefore, highly advisable for a driver to look at the potential repairing costs of a car prior to buying the vehicle. If they cannot repair it themselves, they need to make sure there is someone that can and that they can afford to pay them to do it.
They should check the water, oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid regularly to ensure they have enough fluid in them especially if they are going on a long journey. The more the driver looks after their car, the better chance it has of not needing to be repaired.
